The annual Toronto International Film Festival’s Ebert Director Award which honors a filmmaker for making outstanding contribution to cinema will have ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ director Taika Waititi as its recipient.
Taika will also be at TIFF for the world premiere of his anti-hate satire ‘Jojo Rabbit’ of which he stars as Adolf Hitler alongside Scarlett Johanson, Rebel Wilson and Sam Rockwell. “Taika Waititi is the rock star cinema needs right now. His films are full of razor-sharp humor, faultless style and boundless generosity,” disclosed Toronto artistic director and co-head Cameron Bailey.
TIFF has already named Meryl Streep as recipient of the Tribute honorary award, and Participant Media as recipient of the TIFF Impact award, to be accepted by founder and chairman Jeff Skolla and CEO David Linde.
Waititi away from the whole TIFF honorary expectation is set to direct ‘Thor 4’ the follow-up to ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, which earned around $850 million at the global box office.
The award will be presented to him at the TIFF Tribute Gala awards event on September 9, 2019.
