It’s that time of the decade where the world gets a Taika Waititi ‘Star Wars’ movie. Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed the Academy Award-winning writer’s attachment to direct a developing ‘Star Wars’ film.
Fresh off his Oscar glory for ‘Jojo Rabbit’, Waititi will also co-write the film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the first woman hired to write a ‘Star Wars’ movie after the purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney in 2012 and the co-writer for Sam Mendes’ ‘1917’ war film which picked up 10 Oscar nominations including original screenplay for Krysty.
Waititi’s involvement with the ‘Star Wars’ franchise have been a talk in Hollywood undertone after he chimed to Variety reporters about how he has admired the film series since 1996 during the Oscars backstage interview for winners.
“Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was. I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide,” Waititi disclosed.
The news however does not confirm whether the upcoming project helmed by Waititi is part of the ‘Star Wars’ untitled pictures set to premiere on December 2022, 2024 and 2026.
Adding up to the big announcement, Disney also confirmed that a ‘Star Wars’ TV series is under development at Disney Plus by ‘Russian Doll’ creator Leslye Headland.
Before production begins on his new found gig, Waititi is currently swamped with pre-production works for “Thor: Love and Thunder” staged at Disney’s Marvel Studios and set for theatrical release on February 18, 2022.
