Quentin Tarantino records best weekend opening with ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

Slacking behind Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ in cinemas, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ which is Quentin Tarantino’s ninth franchised film has amassed the filmmaker his best weekend opening ever in box office counts.

The drama which pays tribute to Hollywood’s golden age opened with $40 million from 3,659 North American theaters and scored an opening day record for Tarantino with $16.8 million on Friday. Casting big names, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, the film however received a B Cinema Score from audiences who trooped in to watch, as compared to the director’s A-score he received from his most recent hits, ‘Inglorious Bastards’ produced in 2009 and ‘Django Unchained’ produced in 2012.

Still showing in cinemas and running with backed up positive reviews, critics are of the view that Tarantino is likely to catch up with previous Tarantino films which ended their box office runs with $120 million (Inglorious Bastards) and $425 million (Django Unchained).

Meanwhile, the weekend’s box office record had ‘ The Lion King’ rule with $75.5 million, making it the fourth-biggest release of the year alongside ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Captain Marvel’, Toy Story’ and ‘Aladdin’.
