Inside the costume archives of the late Princess Diana can be found an off-shoulder blue velvet gown designed by Victor Edelstein in 1985. Described by several media headlines and fashion enthusiasts at the time she wore it to a state dinner at the White House, as the most iconic outfit she has ever worn is going on auction, with a pre-sale tagged at £350,000.
The auction will be held at Kerry Taylor auctions in London on December 9, 2019 making it the second time it’s going out for public purchase. In June 1997, two months before her death, the Princess of Wales auctioned it for £420,000 to raise funds for Aids charities.
In the living days of Diana, the Princess wore it three times again after the White House dinner, with the first in 1986 during a state visit to Austria, second, in 1991 for a night at the Royal Opera House and the last time for her portrait creation by Lord Snowden in 1997.
“This is arguably her most iconic gown. The photos of her being twirled around the dance floor by a handsome John Travolta at the White House caused a sensation,’ said Lucy Bishop from the Kerry Taylor auction house in London.
