‘Parasite’ has once again set another record by becoming the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the U.K.
Directed by Bong Joon-Ho, ‘Parasite’ has surpassed Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ film, which held the record for 16 years with a U.K. box office figure of 11.1 million pounds ($14.5 million). ‘Parasite’ now tops the chart with £11.5 million ($15.1 million).
Philip Knatchbull, CEO of Curzon Artificial Eye, distributors of the film disclosed about the new set record saying, “It became clear some time ago that ‘Parasite’ was likely to become the highest grossing non English-language film of all time at the U.K. box office and Curzon is hugely proud to be part of director Bong’s historic moment. There’s still plenty of theatrical life left in its current release before the black and white version hits cinemas in April.”
‘Parasite’ got to the U.K. market on February 7, just 2 days before the Academy Awards where it won four titles including best picture. With its box office weekend debut, the film scored a whopping 1.8 million and as such became the highest-grossing foreign-language opening of all time in the U.K. Soon after the Oscars, ‘Parasite’ received an expansion from 137 cinema halls to 428 theater rooms in the U.K. market.
At the global front ‘Parasite’ counts a total box office number of $257 million, with more than $50 million coming from the U.S and $73 million from South Korea.
