Michelle Obama is heading to Netflix once again for a new documentary titled after her 2018 memoir ‘Becoming’. The documentary will detail behind-the-scenes moments of Obama as she embarks on a 34-city tour to promote her book.
“I’m excited to let you know that on May 6, Netflix will release BECOMING, a documentary film directed by Nadia Hallgren that looks at my life and the experiences I had while touring following the release of my memoir,” said Obama of the announcement.
“Those months I spent traveling, meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe drove the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming’, many of us dared to say our hopes out loud,” she added.
Following the release of ‘Becoming’ in 2018, the memoir to date has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, making it a bestselling book in 2018. It also scored a 2020 Grammy award win for Obama in the best spoken word album category. The coming-to-Netflix documentary is a product from the Obama’s owned company Higher Ground Productions, which is credited for the Oscar winning documentary, ‘American Factory’.
The ‘Becoming’ doc forms part of the multi-year agreement deal signed between the Obamas and Netflix in May 2018 to develop a diverse mix of content ranging from documentaries to films.
Higher Ground co-heads Priya Swaminathan and Tonia Davis are executive producers of the documentary, with Muareen A. Ryan on board as co-executive producer.
