The Met Gala has just been added to the list of global events postponed as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
Arriving at a decision after the fashion-themed event was under consideration to either be hosted or not since the inception of the virus, co-chair of the gala Anna Wintour shared the news via Vogue saying, “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will be postponed to a later date.”
The gala was initially scheduled to take place on May 4, 2020, with the theme ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’. Oscar winners Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda and Louis Vuitton’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière were on board as co-chairs this year.
This year’s postponement comes in as the second time the gala has been rescheduled since the 2002 event cross-out due to the 9/11 attacks.
Adhering to the precautionary measure put in place by New York City authorities, The Met announced last Thursday that its museums; The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer and The Met Cloisters will temporarily be closed until further notice.
Sourced from the official website of the museum, the institute’s About Time exhibit was set to be open May 7-Sept. 7 and explore “how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate the past, present, and future” from 1870 to the present.
So far, other major fashion-oriented shows put on hold include Gucci’s San Francisco Cruise show and Armani’s Dubai fashion show.
