Matt Damon is saying thank you, next to his previously starred in films as he is gearing up his acting prowess for the upcoming movie ‘Stillwater’.
‘Stillwater’ projects the story of an American oil-rig rough neck from Oklahoma, played by Damon, who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with the language barriers, cultural differences and a complicated legal system, Bill makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter. In the course of doing so, he develops a friendship with a local woman and her young daughter and embarks on a personal journey of discovery and a larger sense of belonging in the world.
The feature will be a teaming film for Matt and Tom McCarthy, who is up for directing. The duo nearly came close in partnering as actor/director in the 2016 best picture Oscar film ‘Spotlight’, but due to production clashes on the side of Matt, it wasn’t made possible.
Participant is producing and financing the film, which is also a second date for the production house and the director after ‘Spotlight’. Speaking about the reunion, Participant CEO, David Lane disclosed, “The opportunity to reunite with Tom after ‘Spotlight’ and to partner with our friend and colleague Jonathan King for the first time in his new role makes ‘Stillwater’ a special film for everyone at Participant. This is wonderful script centered on universal themes of connections and the search for truth, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring it to audiences around the world.”
Production for the feature begins in August with Jeff Skoll and Mari Jo Winkler-loffreda as executive producers. Screenplay was written by McCarthy together with Thomas Bidegen and Noe Bebre. Focus Features are left in-charge of domestic distribution whiles Universal Pictures International will distribute in selected international territories.
Looking at Oscar history, the film is likely to secure another buzzing year when released calculating from the ‘Spotlight’ win last three years and ‘Green Book’s’ best picture win last year, which all had Participant involved.
Matt is repped by WME.
