Sony Pictures Entertainment is getting the Leonardo DiCaprio effect. The film studio has inked a multi-year first look deal with the Oscar winner via his Appian Way Productions company, which he co-owns with Jennifer Davisson.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, two undetailed film projects are already in the making by the studio and Appian. DiCaprio’s recent Oscar appearance as a nominee this year was due to his role in the Sony film made by Quentin Tarantino ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’.
“I first met the supernova talented Leonardo DiCaprio over 24 years ago on ‘Romeo and Juliet’. We then shipped out together on the ‘Titanic’ and my admiration for him as a fully rounded filmmaking genius has only increased over the many years since,” said Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group. “His producing and acting instincts — superbly supported by Jennifer — are both driven by service to the best material in the world. At Sony, we feel like we just landed a rare GOAT deal — as Michael Jordan and Tom Brady are to basketball and football, so is Leo to film.”
DiCaprio added, “For over three decades in the business, Tom has never adhered to the traditional Hollywood norms. Never once taking the safe route, he truly values filmmakers and their vision and is extremely supportive of the theatre-going experience. I could not be more excited to enter into a new phase of partnerships with Sony.”
Securing more engagements with Hollywood film houses, ‘The Revenant’ actor has also closed a first-look deal with Apple to develop a series of television shows and documentaries. The Apple deal is bottling up a television project ‘Shining Girls’ which has DiCaprio starring alongside Emmy-winning producer Elizabeth Moss.
