Onyekachi Ekezie, popularly called Kachi, is the founder and CEO of Kaptain Foods Limited, a company established in the Nigerian fast moving consumer goods sector to process and produce a blend of pre-cooked and packaged food products free from chemical additives and artificial preservatives.
Kachi Ekezie had a strong career in oil & gas but let passion lead him to agriculture.
Driven by an interest in creating products that people could consume, and with the downturn of Nigeria’s petroleum sector at the time, Kachi got the opportunity to pursue another career. He observed the limited access to local stew in the diaspora and had a conversation with a friend about the lack of on-the-go stew especially because Nigerians and other Africans in the diaspora often placed orders for such stew to have a feel of what they had enjoyed while in their countries.
This was how he came about the idea to create Kaptain Ready Stews in sachets. It took Kachi close to a year while working from the kitchen of his two-bedroom apartment in Lagos, to carry out all the research to develop the recipe for a new tomato sauce. Upon trying out his first samples with customers, the feedback was encouraging and Kachi knew he had created a commercially viable product.
Kaptain Ready Stews is now distributed across over 300 stores nationwide and is exported to countries like Ghana, U.S and the U.K.
The company has a staff strength of over 30 people. Also, Kachi is one of five Nigerians who made it to the Forbes 30 most promising African entrepreneurs list in 2017.
