Judi Dench: the oldest British Vogue cover star

At age 85, Judi Dench continues her mountain climb of history making by becoming the oldest cover star for British Vogue. The Oscar, Tony, Golden Globes and SAG – winning actress graces the June cover of British Vogue discussing love, life and quarantine.

“Judi is the oldest person ever to grace our cover, and she brings great perspective and a message of hope from her own quarantine in the English countryside. Ever modest, the dame is not a fan of the term national treasure. But treasure her we do. Now more than ever,” wrote editor-in-chief of British Vogue Edward Enniful.

On the cover, Dench is beautifully cladded in a pink, floral silk organza Dolce & Gabbana trench coat, styled by Kate Phelan who describes the English actress as a ‘mega star who has lived life to the full.’

Accompanying the pages of her elegant shots captured by Nick Knight, Dench is pretty much in the same boat as everyone else around the world amidst COVID-19 pandemic locked down in self-isolation to keep safe, “I am sure I feel like everyone else, such unprecedented times are quite hard to comprehend. What is a good thing is that it has made people aware of the predicament of others who are completely alone. If a great deal of kindness comes out of this, then that will be a plus.”

A true legend and a world treasure to behold, Dench’s journey in theater and film has been an open book for critics to dissect the good and bad with her starred-in films. Each release in her old age is assumed to be her last, but the Dame in her sit-down interview with the magazine is not considering the option.

She jokingly responded to the question about her retirement saying, “No, no, no, no. Don’t use that word Giles. Not in this house!”

Dench came into the scene of theater in 1957 at the Old Vic Company, starring in Shakespeare plays such as ‘Hamlet’ (Ophelia), ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (Juliet) and Lady Macbeth in ‘Macbeth’. She rose to international stardom after playing M in ‘Golden Eye’ 1995, the seventeenth film in the James Bond franchise.

To date she is regarded as one of the best actors of all time in film and theater.  Her recent film appearances include, ‘Red Joan’ (2018) and ‘Cats’ (2019). Her soon-to-be-released catalog of films features ‘Six Minutes to Midnight’, a war drama film set for release this year and ‘Artemis Fowl’ based on the novel in the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer.

More notes on her unmatched career and answers to present happenings around the world will be made ready on May 7 by British Vogue.
