Jordan Peele’s ‘US’ the movie, has scored a major hit in box office weekend opening, debuting a $70.30 million at domestic box office.
The Lupita Nyong’o starred movie ‘US’, is currently running as the third-biggest horror opening movie of all time, behind ‘It’, which scored $123.4 million and ‘Halloween’ sequel (r$76.2 million). With its $70.30 million box office opening, ‘US’ has also launched up to become No.1 for an original horror title.
Statistics shows that ‘US’ nabbed $87 million globally, all attained through the first 47 markets of the movie sales, which is four times the film’s $20 million production budget (excluding marketing). The U.K dominated with a whopping $3.8 million, followed by France with $2 million, Germany came in third with $1.4 million and Spain with $1.2 million. Shattering the box office ceilings with its million-dollar making, ‘US’ now boasts the top opening ever for any R-rated, plus, the top bow for a horror feature which is not a sequel and the second-biggest debut of the year so far after ‘Captain Marvel’, which crossed $300 million in the U.S and $900 million globally.
According to PostTrak, Caucasians led the ticket buyers front with 36 percent count, followed by African-Americans with 32 percent, Hispanics with 21 percent and Asian/others with 11 percent.
‘US’ is the second directorial feature for Peele after ‘Get Out’, which won him an Academy award for ‘Original Screenplay’ last year. ‘US’ tells the story of Adelaide Wilson, played by Lupita Nyong’o, an African-American woman who returns to her beachside childhood home with her two children and her husband, played by Winston Duke. Adelaide and her family later become faced with terrifying and uncanny opponents, thus, doppelgangers of themselves.
