‘Joker’, The Irishman’ and more dominate 2020 Oscar nominations

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is out with its final list of films and actors going into the 2020 Oscar ceremony as nominees. The lineup is well dominated by Todd Philips’ ‘Joker’ leading with 11 mentions including best picture, best director for Todd and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Sam Mendes with their directed films ‘The Irishman’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ and ‘1917’ respectively come second in the most nominated count with 10 nods apiece including best director for all.

For the acting category, Scarlett Johansson has picked up two mentions in the best actress and best supporting actress category for her featured performances in ‘Marriage Story’ and ‘Jojo Rabbit’. She competes in the best actress spotlight against Renee Zellweger ‘Judy’, Cynthia Erivo ‘Harriet’, Charlize Theron ‘Bombshell’ and Saoirse Ronan ‘Little Women’. The best supporting actress category has her competing with Laura Dern ‘Marriage Story’, Margot Robbie ‘Bombshell’, Florence Pugh ‘Little Women’ and Kathy Bates ‘Richard Jewell’.

Phoenix is joined by Adam Driver ‘Marriage Story’, Leonardo DiCaprio ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, Antonio Banderas ‘Pain and Glory’ and Jonathan Pryce ‘The Two Popes’ in the best actor lineup, while Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Tom Hanks and Anthony Hopkins face it off in the best supporting actor category for their performances in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, ‘The Irishman’, ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ and ‘The Two Popes’ respectively.

The 2020 Oscar ceremony will take place on February 9, at the Dolby Theater, Los Angeles. ABC will air it live. There will be no host for the night as previously announced.
