As tradition demands in our Ghanaian cultural setting, a welcome ceremony, which we locally call ‘Akwaaba’ is a necessity we cannot forego when an outsider pays us a visit. The four-day visit to Ghana by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla started on Friday November 2, where they were met at the airport by the Speaker of parliament Prof. Mike Ocquaye, who escorted them to the Jubilee House to interact with President Akufo-Addo.
On the night of their first day in Ghana, renowned personalities in Ghana had their turn to meet and interact with the Prince and Duchess in a private reception thrown by the British High Commission to celebrate the close relationship the UK has with Ghana, but was also held in celebration of the Prince’s 70th birthday this month.
Notable among them were, Ghanaian-international based designer Ozwald Boateng, CEO of EIB network Bola Ray, Editor-in-Chief of Glitz Africa magazine Claudia Lumor, CEO of GUBA awards Dentaa Amoateng MBE, dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, award-winning actor John Dumelo, award-winning accessory designer Velma, radio personality KOD and a host of many others.
The reception was treated with performances from celebrated Ghanaian artists, KiDi, Kuami Eugene, King Promise and Becca to form part of the Akwabaa celebration.
