On Saturday, April 21, 2018, it was a night of glitz at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel where nine distinguished women were honoured for their achievements in their various fields of endeavour. Guests were treated to some cocktails and then led to the foyer to take photos with the event backdrops.
This year, the delightful Zimbabwean TV personality Vimbai Mutinhiri joined our regular host, Doreen Andoh as MC. The event took off with a performance from Emma Ofosua Donkor and Akosua Serwaa from the Speakers, Artists & Singers Association (SASA).
Last year’s honourees were acknowledged and Vimbai gave a brief about the She Summit session which took place at the British Council on April 19. Elsie Duncan-Williams performed wonderfully to the delight of the guests. Nana Yaa also gave a powerful performance with a tribute to the late Ebony Reigns; and Adina and Yaa Yaa gave a surprise performance for Efya to end the show on an emotional note.
The Honourees were:
Charlotte Osei – Governance
Kate Quartey-Papafio – Excellence in Business
Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh – Corporate Personality
Afia Pokua – Excellence in Media
Dr. Nana Ama Barnes-Amoa – Excellence in Health
Kosi Yankey – Excellence in Public Enterprise
Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante – Excellence in Film
Dziffa Akua Ametam – Young Star
Efya – Musical Arts
Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh, Dr. Barnes, Afia Pokua and Kate Quartey-Papafio were not present at the event so their citations were read and their representatives picked up the awards on their behalf.
Another highlight of the night was when seven-year old Kekeli Kwaw was acknowledged for supporting her dad’s stroke treatment with limited edition bracelets and also donating to the Stroke Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital. It was indeed a touching and inspirational moment.
A video of ladies speaking on sexual harassment was played featuring Oheneyere Gifty Anti, Dzigbordi Dosoo, Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh and others after which media personality Anita Erskine gave some remarks on the subject.
Personalities like Lady Rosa Whitaker, Dzifa Gomashie, Nana Oye Lithur, Dr. Tukli, Nana Adwoa Awindor, Mawuena Trebarh graced the event. Celebrities and other persons who were present included Nana Akua Addo, Akumaa Mama Zimbi, Anita Erskine, Berla Mundi, AJ Sarpong, Elikem Kumordzie, Ameyaw Debrah, Yemmey Baba etc.
The following female-owned brands supported the event by donating their products to be given to the Honourees for the night: Skin Gourmet, Colorbox Cosmetics, Maybelline, Dark & Lovely, Studio 7, Marie Noelle and Electroland.
The Ghana Women of the Year Honours was proudly sponsored by Dusk Capital Ltd., Brussels Airlines, Veuve Cliquot, The Multimedia Group, Lux, Barcadi and our host, Labadi Beach Hotel.
We can’t wait to do this again next year.
