George Clooney has been named among People Magazine’s ‘2020 People of the Year’. In company with Clooney is American singer Selena Gomez, Academy Award winner Regina King and Dr. Anthony Stephen Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Clooney has been a major mention in the line-up of possible Oscar contenders next year for his upcoming film ‘The Midnight Sky’. In the early days of COVID-19, Clooney donated $1 million in support to organizations offering relief efforts to contracted patients in Los Angeles, London and Italy. He also donated $500,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative, following George Floyd’s death that caused a huge turmoil in the affairs of state.
Gomez, who released her chart-topping album ‘Rare’ and hosted the cooking show “Selena + Chef” on HBO Max initiated a 10-year long term plan to raise $100 million to help give people access to mental health services. The initiative pushed forward via her Rare Beauty makeup brand.
With her first Oscar bagged in 2019, it’s possible King will make a comeback next year as a contender in the best director category for her directorial debut film ‘One Night in Miami’. Upon its release, the film scored positive reviews from critics and theatre audience. The actor’s recognized contributions in the year under review also counts from her support to marginalized communities during the pandemic and also her voice to end police brutality of unarmed Black people. Her fourth Emmy win came in last September for her performance in ‘Watchmen’. She now ties with Alfre Woodard as the two black performers with the most Emmy wins in history.
As the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Fauci provided steady guidance during the turbulent pandemic. As the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, he has been one of the nation’s leading sources of information about the fight against COVID-19.
