AMAA winning actress, Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut with the movie, Lionheart, will have its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The annual festival is scheduled to take place from September 6 to September 16. Lionheart will show on Friday, September 7, 2018.
The film, which is set in Southeast Nigeria, tells the story of a young woman, Adaze Obiagu, played by Genevieve Nnaji, who becomes saddled with the responsibility of running her sick father’s business under the suffocating supervision of an intensely crude and eccentric uncle.
In a statement by the actress now director, Genevieve disclosed Lionheart is the beginning of a journey to explore and express my creative interpretation of story-telling, particularly African stories. Africa is a possessor of the most compelling stories as yet untold, and we are determined to tell our stories, our way, through our voices to the world.”
MPM’s Ricardo Monaster applauded Genevieve for her debut. “It’s a captivating and humorous movie that not only reveals the talent of Genevieve as a first-time director, but also sharply portraits a fast-changing society.”
The movie stars other Nollywood veterans like, Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Ngozi Ezeonu, Onyeka Onwenu, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Kalu Ikeagwu alongside other first timers in film, Peter Okoye and Phyno. The film has grossed over 5,634 views on YouTube few days after its trailer release.
Meanwhile, the 62nd edition of the annual film festival will feature 50 percent of films directed or co- directed by women worldwide with Oscar nominated, Room, director, Lenny Abrahamson as Jury President.
