The American Film Institute has submitted its final list of best 10 movies and best 10 television shows of the year.
In the final submission, Netflix recorded the most wins on both sides with four slots apiece in each category. Their popular films such as Spike Lee’s ‘Da 5 Bloods,’ George C. Wolfe’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ David Fincher’s ‘Mank’ and Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ were among the film category. On the television side, the streaming platform dominated with ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, ‘The Crown’, ‘Unorthodox’ and the latest addiction ‘Bridgerton’.
Amazon Studios was in the mention with two films from first-time filmmakers Regina King (One Night in Miami) and Darius Marder’s (Sound of Metal). Searchlight Pictures, A24, Pixar and Warner Bros tallied the remainder four with their films ‘Nomadland’, ‘Minari’, ‘Soul’ and ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ respectively.
Other shows in the television bracket include AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul’, Showtime’s ‘The Good Lord Bird’, HBO’s ‘Lovecraft Country’, Disney Plus’s ‘The Mandalorian’, Hulu’s ‘Mrs. America’ and Apple TV Plus’s ‘Ted Lasso’.
‘Hamilton’ from Disney Plus received the Special AFI Award. The AFI Awards tributes will take place on Feb. 26 on AFI’s YouTube channel.
Over the years, the AFI has been a major determiner in the type of films and shows that gain much buzz during awards season. Movies and shows enlisted in the best film and television categories go on to secure a best picture or best drama/comedy series nomination at big ticket ceremonies such as the Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes.
