Celebrating Kente at Roots Hotel in Accra

Last month, Roots Hotel Apartment, a design inspired boutique hotel in Accra, launched “Back To Your Roots” a series of cultural events and experiences inspired by Ghana’s national tourism initiative, “The Year of Return”. The series began with Afro Dance classes and continues with a Kente workshop and exhibition on Wednesday, 28th August that will highlight the history and beauty of Kente cloth with an interactive workshop/ weave demonstration.  Kente cloth and items will also be available for sale.

“Kente has become one of the most well-known textiles from Ghana. It is a brilliantly colourful fabric, entirely hand-woven by weavers whose intricate designs reflect the culture and symbolism of the Akan people. Our Let’s Kente event will celebrate Ghana’s rich heritage and explore the history of this traditional cloth, especially for diasporans and visitors who want to learn more about Ghanaian culture,” shares Rima Fakhry, the Director of Customer Experience at Roots Hospitality International, the parent company for Roots Hotel Apartment Accra, Roots Hotel Apartment Abidjan and Urbano Hotel.

Roots Hotel Apartment has welcomed travellers visiting Ghana for the Year of Return with cultural displays including drummers, dancers and local drinks upon arrival to the hotel to exhibit the true sense of Ghanaian hospitality. In addition to the Afro Dance and Kente workshops, Back To Your Roots programs will also feature Storytelling, Batik, Bead and Shea Butter Making, African Movie Nights, and Eat and Paint sessions for intimate groups.

Roots Hotel Apartment and its sister hotel, Urbano are a part of the new hospitality trend in Ghana focused on affordable luxury and improved customer service. Located in the heart of Osu, Accra’s most vibrant neighbourhood, Roots Hotel Apartment features apartment-style suites decorated in rich African accents with stunning city views, fully equipped kitchenettes, a state-of-the-art gym, an ultra-modern conference room, Esuro, a rooftop restaurant with an infinity jacuzzi and The Purple Cafe.

“The Year of Return has led to an influx of travellers who are looking to make meaningful and cultural connections while in Ghana. Back to Your Roots offers our guests an opportunity to connect with the culture, traditions and people of Ghana enhanced with an exceptional hospitality experience at our hotels,” adds Fakhry.

Back to Your Roots series is opened to Roots and Urbano Hotel guests, travellers and the general public upon registration. The program is an independent project of Roots Hospitality International, in partnership with local artisans and cultural practitioners.
