To detoxify means to rid something of toxins-which are harmful substances to the body. Detoxification has become necessary in our time because we tend to eat such a wide variety of dishes, ice-creams, smoothies, fizzy drinks and so on, inhale an array of fumes and gases and come into contact with so many chemicals.
Detoxification involves cleansing and resting the body from inside out. It is also important to note that feeding the body with healthy nutrients is part of the detoxification process. A body devoid of toxins is protected from disease and constantly has a renewed and improved ability to maintain optimum health.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The body, by its own make, removes impurities from the blood with the help of the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, the lymphatic system and the skin. A detoxification program can help the natural cleansing process by:
- Resting the organs by fasting
- Stimulating the liver to eliminate the toxins
- Promoting elimination through intestines, kidneys and skin
- Refueling the body with healthy nutrients
- Plenty of fibre, including brown rice and organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Cabbage, broccoli, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.
- Herbs like dandelion root and milk thistle as well as green tea, cleanse and protect the liver.
- Take vitamin C, which helps produce glutathione-a compound that drives away toxins.
- Drink at least 2 litres of water every day.
- Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes; follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times.
- Sweat in a sauna so your body would be able to eliminate waste through perspiration.
- Try foot baths to remove toxins through your pores.
