Nia Wilson, a young black woman was fatally stabbed by a white man at the BART MacArthur station on Sunday evening together with her sister, Latifah Wilson, 26, but fortunately did not lose her life as Nia, 18 did.
Following the history of black people been murdered by whites in America. Oscar winners, Anne Hathaway and Viola Davis alongside Blackish actress, Tracee Ellis Ross have taken to social media to mourn the death of the young innocent black girl. In their post mourning they also used their write-ups to remind their fellow American white people that Black lives do matter just as theirs.
On Wednesday, Anne posted a picture of Nia on Instagram with an impassioned caption addressing her murder, stressing the role that white people play in violence against black people in the United States. She wrote,
“The murder of Nia Wilson-may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here-is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence. She is not hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man” Anne continued, “White people-including me, including you-must take into the narrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives Daily in America and have done so for GENERATIONS. White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action? Peace and prayers and JUSTICE for Nia and the Wilson family xx. In response to Anne’s statement actress and wife of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith shared Anne’s post and captioned, “Bless you @annehathway. Your courageous words and compassion gave my heart some hope today ? #sisterhood”.
Another Academy winning actress, Viola Davis shared her frustration as to the rate of these killing and its constant repetition. The Fence actress described the incident as quoted, “You know…at what point will it stop? I’m getting tired of heartbreak. Tired of needing to organize rallies to convince people that our lives matter. To the killer…I will NOT say your name. To Nia…we will shout yours from the rooftops!!!”
As one of the leading voices when it comes to black lives, Tracee Ellis Ross tweeted a widely shared video of black rapper, Chicka Oranika rapping about Wilson’s death. “Our bodies and our humanity deserve safety and joy,” the Blackish actress wrote alongside the video.
