Good news for ‘Aladdin’ lovers. The 2019 Disney live-action movie is getting a sequel version.
Still in its early stages of pre-production, Disney has employed the services of John Gatins and Andrea Berloff to pen down the script for the sequel. Director of the original version, Guy Ritchie is returning to the director’s bench, while Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are producing and Ryan Halprin will executive produce.
The 2019 ‘Aladdin’ film was based on the 1992 animated film about the titular street urchin, who with the help of a magic genie wins the heart of Princess Jasmine. The original animated movie had two straight-to-video sequels, but sources say this new take is completely original and not based on those ideas.
Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott are expected to return as cast members for the sequel.
‘Aladdin’ was a global hit grossing a massive $355 domestically and $1.05 billion at the global box office. It doubles as the fourth live-action adaptation to accumulate a billion-dollar box office income joining ‘The Lion King’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
