When Jessica Lange described Ryan Murphy as an ‘artist of unlimited creative power and talent’ in her article submission about the filmmaker for Time 100 Most Influential People in 2019, it was neither a flattery nor lie but an attribute that goes well with the creative force.
Starting off his career in the late 1990s, Murphy is bringing his storytelling excellence to the game once more with a titled miniseries ‘Hollywood’ which dates back to the era of Hollywood after World War II. The 7 episode-miniseries forms part of Murphy’s collective design of works in his five years contract with Netflix worth $300 million.
From streaming platform to the entirety of the plot, we break it down below in our complete guide to Murphy’s next big thing.
The Plot
Scripted on IndieWire, ‘Hollywood’ follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in Tinseltown—no matter the cost. Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day. Provocative and incisive, ‘Hollywood’ exposes and examines decades-old power dynamics, and what the entertainment landscape might look like if they had been dismantled.
The Cast
Typical of Murphy to assemble both the old and new for a blockbuster, the Emmy-winning producer has put together a formidable cast namely; Darren Criss, David Corenswet, Laura Harrier, Jeremy Pope, Samara Weaving, Jim Parsons, Dylan McDermott, Holland Taylor, Patti LuPone, Joe Mantello, Jake Picking and Queen Latifah. Daren starred in Murphy’s real-life crime story ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’, the show scored him a Golden Globe
and Emmy win. He became the very first Asian American actor to win an Emmy for acting.
Release Date
‘Hollywood’ will be released on May 1 on Netflix with all seven episodes.
