In their acceptance speech for Best International Artist (Group) at the 2019 BRIT Awards, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who were not present at the 02 Arena in London for the event, recreated a scene from their ‘Apesh*t’ music video, where they both stood on either side in front of the portrait of Mona Lisa at the Louvre museum, but this time around at a portrait of Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex) wearing a crown. A move most Twitter users have tagged ‘political’ in support of Meghan following recent hostility the Duchess suffered from the British media and tabloid press.
In the acceptance video, Beyoncé said holding the BRIT statue, “Thank you so much to the Brit awards for this incredible honor. You guys have always been supportive. Everything is love, thank you.” After the speech presentation, the iconic couple turned to the painting and made a bow per royal protocol.
Part of the captioned words beneath Beyoncé’s Instagram post, congratulated the Duchess on her pregnancy and made mention of ‘Black History Month’. It read, “In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our melaninated Monas. congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.”
If truly the Bey and Jay move is ‘political’ as assumed, then they join in on the likes of the Duchess’ friend and Oscar winner George Clooney, who came in the defense of his royal friend articulating that the Duchess is being “vilified and chased” and tagged it as “history repeating itself” just as the late Princess Diana suffered in the late 90s.
