Award season is here, and key players in Hollywood are all rounded up for to either present an award or take home a best win for a category. With Screen Actors Guild Awards around the corner slated for January 27, this month some A-list stars in the film and television fraternity are being booked to make an appearance as award presenters for the night, but per reports reaching SAG-AFTRA, the Oscars are pressuring potential presenters to either choose to present at the Oscars or the SAG awards.
This claim was made known by SAG-AFTRA on Monday in a statement disclosing, “We have received multiple reports of these activities and have experienced firsthand the Academy’s graceless pressure tactics and attempts to control the awards show talent pipeline. Award season is a very special time when actors and actresses are being appropriately celebrated and recognized for the outstanding quality of their work. We would expect the Academy to honor these goals.”
The statement continued declaring the actions of the Academy as unacceptable and outrageous and called for it to be ceased, “This self-serving intimidation of SAG-AFTRA members is meant to limit their opportunities to be seen and honor the work of their fellow artists throughout the season. Actors should be free to accept any offer to participate in industry celebrations. The apparent attempt by the Academy to keep our members from presenting on their own awards show is utterly outrageous and unacceptable. The SAG Awards supports their union’s operations and important charitable assistance programs that provide valuable support to performers. We call on the Academy to cease this inappropriate action.”
The SAG Awards already has on board multiple award-winning actor Tom Hanks as a presenter whereas the Oscars is yet to name one presenter for its 91st show come next month.
