Angelina Jolie’s ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ has surprisingly recorded a lower box office count than expected. The film, which stars Jolie as fire jumper Hannah who rescues young Connor (Finn Little) from his father’s killers, amassed a paltry $2.8 million in its opening weekend.
Released simultaneously on HBO Max, the movie counted its $2.8 million from 3,198 theatres across board, which according to Variety is a sizable footprint considering only 65% movie theatres are currently open in the U.S.
HBO Max is yet to release the number of visits the film has received so far on the streaming side.
Beating Jolie’s comeback tentpole at the box office is Chris Rock’s latest addition to the ‘Saw’ franchise ‘Spiral’ from Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures. The film grossed a total of $8.7 million from 2,811 theatres between Friday and Sunday. Despite its No.1 placement on the box office count, the accrued numbers do not reason with its $20 million budget allocation.
Internationally, the film scored an additional $3.3 million from 16 countries and as such raised its global figure to $12 million.
At number 2 on the top five chart is ‘Wrath of Man’, which stars Jason Stathman, Scott Eastwood and Post Malone. The film placed No.2 in its second weekend opening with $3.7 million 3,007 theatre locations. Within its 10 days of theatre existence, the film has made $14.6 million in North America, plus a $41.4 million overseas raising its worldwide accumulation at $56 million.
Behind ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ harbours Holdovers ‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’ and Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ No. 4 and 5 respectively.
‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’ collected $1.8 million, while ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ ended the weekend with $1.7 million.
