Gollywood Flashback: ‘Adams Apples’ revitalizes the template of storytelling in Gollywood

A little over 10 years ago, Shirley Frimpong-Manso pieced together a ten-chapter film series ‘Adams Apples’.

Loosely interpreted through its theme song ‘Sexy, Sassy, Wahala’, by Efya, the film showcased the delicate lives of the Adams family, consisting of three beautiful sisters Joselyn Dumas (Jennifer), Yvonne Okoro (Baaba) and Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku (Kuukua). On the helm of the family dynasty was their widowed charismatic mother Doris, played by actress Anima Misa Amoah.

Bringing in a new dynamic into the then well-placed Ghana Movie Industry, each chapter capsuled a formidable twist and turn that delved deeper into the individual secrets, lies and regrets of the family.

Jennifer was the strong African woman and big sister to the other two, whose complicated sexual life regulated her personal and business commitments to a larger extent. Baaba on the other hand, walked audience through the unpleasant encounters a divorcing mother is subjected to, while Kuukua embodied a confused starlet trapped under the wings of love and lust for two brothers.

Aside the flaws and bandages of the sisters, Doris’ own imperfection was a thousand-wattage higher than any introduced drama. Her desire for a romantic resurgence topped with the challenge of connecting with her long-lost son Albert Amankwah (Adjetey Anang) gave the show (if we can call it that way) a steady interpretation of reconciliation and regret.

Across all ten chapters highlighted a bolder storytelling, far from the numb thrillers caged as good body of works in cinemas.

Evidently a commercial success, ‘Adams Apples’ also won at the 2011 Ghana Movie Awards including best story and best cameo actress for legendary actress Grace Nortey.
