On the second night of the NAACP virtual awards handout, ‘I May Destroy You’ writer, producer, director and actress, Michaela Coel picked up Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
Coel was up against ‘Insecure’s Issa Rae, ‘The Rock’s credited writers Lee Eisenberg, Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Netflix’s ‘Pilot’ show writers Mindy Kaling, Lang Fisher, and Rajiv Joseph of ‘The Manager’ on Apple TV +.
Attica Locke was also feted with the Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for ‘Little Fires Everywhere’, while Geri Cole took home Outstanding Writing in a Television Movie or Special for ‘The Power of We: A Sesame Street Journal’.
On the film side, Radha Blank’s ‘The Forty-Year-Old Version’ picked up Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture, beating Oscar favourites ‘One Night in Miami’ and ‘Minari’.
Away from the writing categories, Anya Adams’ directorial role on ‘Black-ish’ won him the Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series, with Hanelle Culpepper winning Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for ‘Remembrance’.
Prior to the second wave of winners announced yesterday, the first batch of the NAACP 2021 recipients netted former US President Barrack Obama as winner of the Outstanding Literary Work – Nonfiction for his memoir ‘A Promised Land’.
The non-televised virtual ceremony is expected to run throughout the week to Friday, March 26, before the live telecast on Saturday, March 28 on BET and across ViacomCBS’ networks including CBS, VH1 and MTV.
The NAACP Image Awards recognizes the achievements of people of color in TV, music, literature and film and those who promote social justice through creative endeavors.
