Cate Blanchett named jury president of Venice International Film Festival

Academy award-winning actress Cate Blanchett has been named by the board of directors of the Biennale di Venezia as jury president of the 2020 Venice International Film Festival.

Blanchett’s appointment makes her the third female in four years to lead the jury. “Every year, I look forward expectantly to the selection at Venice and every year it is surprising and distinct. Venice is one of the most atmospheric film festivals in the world. A celebration of the provocative and inspirational medium that is cinema in all its forms. It is a privilege and a pleasure to be this year’s jury president,” said Blanchett.

Venice director Alberto Barbera made the recommendation for Cate to be appointed president of the jury. Barbera commented, “Cate Blanchett is not just an icon of contemporary cinema, courted by the greatest directors of the past 20 years and adored by moviegoers of every kind. Her commitment in the artistic and humanitarian fields and to the protection of the environment, as well as her defense of the emancipation of women in a film industry still coming to terms with male prejudice, have made her an inspiration for society as a whole.”

In 2018, the ‘Carol’ actress was jury president of the Cannes Film Festival. Executing her duties at the festival, Blanchett led a female march which included fellow jury members Kristen Stewart and Ava DuVernay, to promote gender equality in the film industry. She is a two-time Oscar winner, wining in 2005 for best supporting actress ‘The Aviator’ and best actress in a lead role 2014 for ‘Blue Jasmine’.

The 77th Venice International Film Festival will run from September 2-12.
