The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is out with its 2020 award contenders’ line-up. The 25 categories feature selected films that amassed a huge buzz in 2019 in terms of production quality and box office shuttering numbers.
Stars up for the best leading actress honor includes recently Golden Globe winning actress Reene Zellweger (Judy) alongside top contenders Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) and Charlize Theron (Bombshell). In the best actor category, ‘Joker’ star Joaquin Phoenix is up against Academy award winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Taron Egerton (Rocketman) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).
Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Brad Pitt, are all competing in the best supporting actor category with their starred in films ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’, ‘The Two Popes’, ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ respectively.
Meanwhile, Margot Robbie is in competition with herself in the best supporting actress category. The actress is up with two films ‘Bombshell’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, competing against Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Florence Pugh (Little Women).
By counts, ‘Joker’ leads the nominations with a total of 11 mentions, followed by Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ by Quentin Tarantino with 10 each. Sam Mendes’ ‘1917’ picture follows closely with 9 nominations including best director for him.
The awards ceremony is slated to take place on February 2, 2020, at the Royal Albert Hall.
