Netflix lands streaming rights over ‘Vikings’ developing sequel

‘Vikings’ will end its home run with season 6, set to premiere in December this year, but a sequel to the original series has already been picked by Netflix, titled ‘Vikings Valhalla’ which is set 100 years after the end of the mothership ‘Vikings’.

The developing sequel will bring on screen, the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived: Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror. These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever-changing and evolving Europe.

Original show creator Michael Hirst will reprise his role for the sequel, together with studio MGM Television. Jeb Staurt will write and executive produce alongside Hirst and Morgan O’Sullivan.

“I’m beyond excited that we are announcing the continuation of our ‘Vikings’ saga. I know that the millions of our fans across the globe will be thrilled by the belief being shown in our show by MGM and Netflix. Jeb Stuart, a truly wonderful writer, will bring new story-lines and a powerful visceral vision to stories about some of the most famous Vikings known to history,’ Hirst disclosed of the upcoming drama.

The ‘Vikings’ series since its debut with season one in 2013, still gross as the biggest series for History, the flagship company behind the original, after its post-bankruptcy. Both History and Netflix as well as other streamers were in competition for the sequel pick-up earlier this year, before Netflix landed the series in a pricey deal.

Netflix is expected to have to pursue SVOD rights to ‘Vikings’ to have on the platform alongside the sequel. Plans are underway to shoot the sequel in Ireland, where the original version was shot.
