Spike Lee is following up his Oscars 2019 best director nomination with a developing legendary film ‘Prince of Cats.’
The adaptation is based on a graphic novel written and illustrated by Ron Wimberly, who Lee will rewrite the script with, alongside Selwyn Seyfu Hinds. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the project is described as an 80s-set hip-hop take on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’, with the tragic star-crossed love story seen through the eyes of Tybalt, Juliet’s angry and duel-loving cousin.
‘Prince of Cats’ tells the story of Tybalt and his Capulet brothers, who have navigated Da People’s Republic of Brooklyn, where underground sword dueling including Katanas, with the rival Montagues blossoms into a vibrant world. That world is said to include hip-hop essentials such as Djing, emceeing, breakdancing and graffiti. Zucker Productions originals Janet and Kate Zucker are producing alongside Legendary’s Jon Silk and Ali Mendes.
At the 2019 Oscars, Lee scored a best picture, best director nomination for ‘BlacKkKlansman’ and a win in the category of best adapted screenplay. His gallery of Hollywood works includes; ‘She’s Gotta Have It’, ‘Do the Right Thing’, ‘Jungle Fever’, ‘Crooklyn’, ‘Clockers’ and many more.
