Only the best of music gets noticed at the Grammys.
At last night’s Premiere Ceremony, the preceding event before the main Grammy night, Africa’s biggest stars Burna Boy and Wizkid won their first Grammy awards.
Burna won the Best World Music Album with ‘Twice as Tall’, making him the very first Nigerian artist ever, to win the international trophy with a solo project. Burna Boy’s fourth studio album, ‘African Giant’ released in 2019 was nominated at last year’s event, but failed to pick up the prize after losing to legendary Angelique Kidjo.
Wizkid’s feature on Beyoncé’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ also took home the Best Music Video prize, making him the second Nigerian artist to attain such fete with an international collaboration. His first Grammy nomination came in 2015, when he was nominated in the Album of the Year category for his turn on Drake’s album ‘Views’.
Going in to the night, equally big acts; Tiwa Savage, Femi Kuti and Made Kuti were also badged Grammy nominees in the Album of the Year category for their vocal contribution on Coldplay’s ‘Everyday Life’.
Other notable winners of the night include; Meghan Thee Stallion, who won three categories including best new artist and Beyoncé, who also picked up four trophies, making her the most rewarded female artist in Grammy history (28).
Taylor Swift also recorded a historic fete with her ‘Folklore’ album, which took home Album of the Year, cementing her track record as the only female artist to win the mentioned category three times.
