For the first time on the 2021 awards season circuit, Zendaya has received a nomination for her performance in Netflix’s two-cast film ‘Malcolm & Marie’. Zendaya is up for the Critics’ Choice Awards best actress alongside Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman), Frances McDormand (Nomadland), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Sidney Flanigan (Never Rarely Sometimes Always) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman).
For best actor, regular mentions in the 2021 pack, namely; Gary Oldman (Mank), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Anthony Hopkins (The Father), Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Steven Yeun (Minari) are up against Ben Affleck (The Way Back), Tom Hanks (News of the World) and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods).
Making history at the CCAs this year is Netflix. The streaming platform picked up four nods in the best picture category with the films ‘Mank’, ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’, ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ and ‘The 5 Bloods’, a record-setting number for any studio since the inception of the CCA.
The other films racing for best picture alongside Netflix’s pack are, ‘Nomadland’, ‘Promising Young Woman’, ‘One Night in Miami’, ‘Sound of Metal’ ‘News of the World’ and ‘Minari’.
Adding the released film figures to the already announced television nominations, Netflix has scored most nominations with 72 nods, followed by HBO and Amazon Studios with 24 and 18 nominations respectively.
The ceremony is slated to take place on Sunday March 7, in a live broadcast on CW. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the live event will take the in-person/virtual hybrid format as against the full in-person ceremony witnessed in past years. Taye Diggs is hosting.
